Coffee Mornings

Coffee Mornings at Cranborne SchoolFriends of Cranborne would like to invite all Cranborne parents & carers to come and join them for a cup of tea/coffee & biscuits (squash will be available for toddlers), on Friday 28th January 2011 in the Activity Room (next to 2S) from 8:50 till 10:00. It will be nice to see you even if you can only stay for a short while. All that we ask is that you make a donation towards your refreshments (all proceeds will go back to the school).

We hope to hold a coffee morning on the last Friday of each month, so check back here on the homepage for future dates and venues.

A Stage Complete

Stage 1 CompleteIt’s hard to believe that in just over a week so much has been accomplished and that we have now reached the point where Stage 1 of the project is complete. The main structure is in place and the larger portion of the original decked area is both water and weather proof. To say that we are thrilled with the results achieved so far is an understatement! If you’ve been following the build from day one via the Outdoor Classroom Gallery you’ll have seen how far we’ve come. It really has exceeded all of our expectations… and this is just the beginning.

Stage 2 of the project will involve the interior of the classroom and the provision of seating and lighting. Our original plans to replace the exisiting bench seating with an upgraded version have now been revised. Discussions with Headteacher Alan Cocker on-site revealed that something more bespoke and special would be required where seating is concerned and an upgrade to the originally proposed lighting scheme is also on the cards. Details about both of those features will be provided in a later post.

On a personal note, I would like to thank Jason and Liz for their tireless work in my absence last week, ensuring that the project was kept on track. It was reassuring to know that matters were left in such capable hands.

Working Come Rain or Shine

RainbowFollowing the completion of the decking cleaning, Monday 9th August marked the official start for the construction of the stage roof and Vision Shelters turned up bright and early. It was very much a preparation day, that included unloading and setting up tools, combined with a couple of trips to local trade suppliers to purchase necessary materials. Work began in earnest in the afternoon and involved the digging of new post holes, the mixing of concrete and the cutting of redwood timber. Good progress was made and hopes were high for a continuation of the fine weather on Tuesday.

Unfortuantely, it wasn’t to be and Tuesday brought with it driving rain that barely let up all day. But the weather couldn’t dampen Martyn and Dave’s spirits and the wise purchase of a large tarpaulin provided them with the cover needed to press on regardless. Their supreme efforts paid off as all bar two of the main roof support posts were seated and concreted into position by late Tuesday evening. An added bonus and reward for all the hard work done was the sudden appearance of the most vivid and defined rainbow any of us had seen as we were packing up. It lifted wearied spirits and heralded the fine weather which was to come on Wednesday.

Work Has Begun!

Preparatory WorkAfter finalising plans and obtaining full sign-off, work has begun on the Outdoor Classroom project at the school. Over the past 2-3 days, some volunteer parents have removed the rotting beams that edge the decked stage area and begun dismantling the existing seating and balustrades in preparation for the arrival of Vision Shelters. Once these unnecessary elements have been cleared, all of the decking will be cleaned and washed to ready it for treating.

Updates will continue to be posted as the project progresses.
Take a look at what’s been happening so far HERE.
